The Apple Game
Directed by Věra Chytilová, the film attempts to capture the essence of the constant conflict between men and women in a comedy form and at the same time to find answers to the question to what extent a game with human feelings is possible and when and how it ceases to be a game.

The protagonists of the story are Dr. John, an obstetrician, a single man in his late thirties, who is very selfish in his private life, and Anna Šímová, a young nurse who, despite her seemingly crazy behaviour, has a much more responsible approach to life. John develops a frivolous relationship with the girl, as he has with so many others before. This time, however, his game of love turns against him. When he tries to correct his mistake, it's too late. You can play in life, but you can't play at living. That's why John's „But I don't want to play anymore“ Anna replies, „That's too bad, we're looking for someone who can.“ The motif of the apple, which accompanies the story, is a symbol of the knowledge of people's character, a symbol of the fruit of human action and a symbol of the fruit of human love – a child.
