A comedic film depicting scenes from the life of an aging gentleman and seducer of young girls, who is desperate to grab what he can because of his fear of old age and death. Gradually, however, he realises that his actions are vain and foolish, that he has been losing rather than gaining in his life. And so Faun, a charming and successful man at first sight, becomes a tragicomic figure of a useless man. The scriptwriters Věra Chytilová and Ester Krumbachová were aiming for a kind of modern commedia dell'arte. By interlacing comedic and serious situations, they reveal the deeper core of the problem, the theme of old age and the theme of a wasted life. Apart from the director's handwriting, the film is dominated by the visual depiction of Prague in the 1980s and the outstanding performance of Leoš Suchařípa.
