A lightly wistful comedy about a quest of self-discovery that asks whether refugee status is a condition of geographical location or whether it’s a state of mind. It’s also a film about hope coming along when we least expect it.

Lonely Donia works in a fortune cookie factory in San Francisco. She stays up all night, says hello to her neighbours in the morning and goes to work. Can she ask for more from life when, unlike her family, she had the chance to leave her native Afghanistan? The independent girl decides to go against her luck and hides a daring message in one of the cookies. Fremont is a charming comedy about finding oneself and the hope that comes when we least expect it. With its fresh humour and soundtrack reminiscent of Jim Jarmusch's cult works, the film took home the Best Director award for Babak Jalali at the Karlovy Vary IFF 2023.
