The Tank Battalion
The omedic experiences of Danny, a college student, during his basic military service in the 1950s. He encounters both the stupidity of quick-witted officers and the cleverness of ordinary soldiers who, with their own humour, resist military absurdity.

The main hero of the adaptation of Josef Škvorecký's famous short stories is Staff Sergeant Danny Smiřický (bearing the biographical features of the author), who, together with his fellow soldiers, experiences basic military service in the difficult years 1953–54. We will witness Danny resist the stupidity of the permanently bullying communist officers, thinking only of civilian life, women and drink, and „enthusiastically“ participating in the sharp shootings, Fučík's badge tests and other fun in Čepička's army. Based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Radek John, Vít Olmer's film was the first privately made feature film in Czech cinema history since the 1945 nationalization act, and the first Czech film with Western-style publicity.
