About

In the second part of the still unfinished American trilogy, based on the theme of the USA as a land of unlimited possibilities, Lars von Trier reintroduces the character Grace – the heroine of his previous film Dogville. Grace and her father move from Colorado in the early 1930s to Alabama, to an old plantation called Manderlay, where they are confronted with the horrific cruelty and injustice of slavery. Grace must intervene. But with what result? Orders maintained for decades are crumbling, but will teaching slaves democracy prove effective? Set in a studio with only a few sets, but featuring a stellar cast. The cinematography, production design and music earned the piece a European Film Award nomination.
