About

Girls’ dreams tend to end in the kind of bitter disappointment experienced here by the naïve Andula. A trainee at a shoemaking plant, Andula is searching for the love of her life and also hopes that someone will take her away from the ugly provincial town where her life at the factory and boarding house is the only existence she knows. Except that the illusion that happiness is within reach is soon quashed not only by Prince Charming himself, Míla, a musician from Prague, but also by his anxious parents. Almost three generations of viewers have been cheered as well as moved by this story which bears all the attributes of modern storytelling – a plot without classical dramatization, an open ending, and straightforward characterization. Even very early on in his career, Miloš Forman had already proved he was capable of creating an impression of sheer authenticity.
