François, a young carpenter, lives happily with his wife and their children. His life is divided between the carpenter’s shop, picnics in the country and peaceful evenings at home. One day, he meets a postal clerk called Emilie.

Young carpenter François loves his wife, his children and nature. Then he meets another woman, a post office worker, who adds to his happiness. Still very much in love with his wife, he doesn't want to deprive himself, hide or lie. One day at a picnic in the Ile-de-France, tragedy strikes: his wife drowns in a pond. The carpenter and the postwoman live together and bring up their children. They go on picnics, but it's autumn.
