Inspiration, creation, sharing – these are the principles underlying the work of Agnès Varda as defined by the famous director herself in her last, acclaimed documentary, which screened at the Berlinale. Facing the auditorium, the pioneer of the French New Wave takes us back to the sets of some of her previous pictures, which, from the mid-20th century onwards, secured her a leading position in world cinema. Her testimony is accompanied by those of erstwhile colleagues, such as Sandrine Bonnaire, whom she cast in a breakthrough role in Vagabond (Golden Lion, Venice 1985). The segment devoted to her digital period (2000–2018), where Varda discusses her working methods, develops into an inspired lesson in film and in the concept of artistic commitment, both on and off-screen.
