About

Summer 1910. Several tourists have vanished from the local beach. Notorious inspector Machin and his associate Malfoy soon discover that the mysterious trail leads to the Bruforts, a local family of fishermen ruled with an iron fist by the father, nicknamed “The Eternal.” The degenerate bourgeois Van Peteghem family arrive at their holiday villa to take in the sun, the sea, and the local rural colour. Quite out of the blue, Brufort’s son Ma Loute and Billie Van Peteghem fall in love, a state of affairs that introduces an element of confusion and mystification into the lives of all concerned and starts to reveal something of their true characters. Bruno Dumont once again brings us a multilayered account of the darker aspects of human nature, here veiled within a slapstick piece and crazy situation comedy. The film offers a unique opportunity for well-known actors such as Juliette Binoche and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi to demonstrate and explore their comedic talent. A visually entrancing work which provoked controversy at Cannes IFF.
