The Secret World of Arrietty is based on the internationally popular series by British writer Mary Norton about the Borrowers. It was adapted into a screenplay by Miyazaki and directed by animator Hiromasa Jonebayashi, who has previously worked on most of the studio's productions, starting with the legendary Princess Mononoke. The film's narrative focuses on portraying the fantasy world of the Borrowers. These are tiny people living in the spaces between the walls or under the floors of old houses, who borrow everything they need to live from their inhabitants. Young Arrietty lives like this with her parents in the house where the grandmother of the young boy Sho lives. On the day Sho arrives, Arrietty is about to make her first trip with her father to the world of big people for supplies.
