About

A remarkable journey of two very different people in search of a secret that has been hidden for half a century. Martin Sixmith (Steve Coogan) is a former BBC foreign correspondent who has lost his job. By coincidence, he gets the chance to uncover what could be the story of his life. His client is Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), a 70-year-old quirky and distinctive Irish lady. She became pregnant as a teenager in the 1950s and gave birth to a son, Anthony. To see him for at least an hour a day, she lived and worked in a convent for „fallen women“. When Anthony was 3 years old, he was forcibly taken from Philomena, given up for adoption by nuns and sent to America. Philomena spent 50 years searching in vain for her child. Philomena and Martin embark on an extraordinary journey together. Philomena is an honest, direct lady who takes people as they are. Through all the hardships of life, she still retains her optimism and faith. Martin, on the other hand, is a worldly, educated man who is used to the company of important and wealthy people. The loss of his beloved journalistic work in the political spheres has made him a cynic. As they search for Philomena's lost son, they learn from each other, confront their differing views, and open each other up to a new and different perspective on life.
