The second half of the nineteenth century is underway and revolutionary changes are sweeping through a turbulent Italy. One night, the Papal Guard bursts into the home of the Jewish Mortara family with orders to seize six-year-old Edgardo. The boy is said to have been secretly baptised and now belongs by law to the Catholic Church. Against the backdrop of the years-long struggle to unify Italy, with the Church's position and power shaken to its foundations, Edgardo's family fights for justice and the return of their kidnapped son. But the Pope is a powerful opponent.
