Chiara
The Guerrasio family are celebrating the 18th birthday of the oldest daughter yet, in his third film, the supreme talent of Italian cinema focuses his gaze more often on her fifteen-year-old sister Chiara, on the girls’ affectionate sibling rivalry, and ultimately on Chiara’s shock at the sudden disappearance of the father she adores. Carpignano has remained in Calabria, a region of harrowing contrasts, absolute love, unsettling gazes and its own rules. He has become a proud adoptive son of the marginalised South, portraying its people with genuine warmth and appreciation, with commendable authenticity, and with the naturalism of someone who is familiar with the conditions and understands them. The drama A Chiara was named best film in Directors’ Fortnight at 2021 Cannes festival.
