Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies

Through personal correspondence, this Italian film returns the universally beloved Dutch artist to the places of his life and work. In doing so, it intertwines with him the little-known fate of the woman who was one of the first to recognise his talent.

About

Vincent van Gogh is now considered a universally loved artist. But this was not always the case. Very little is said about the person who was one of the first to recognise van Gogh's talent and was instrumental in promoting his work. Helene Kröller-Müller was the richest woman in Holland at the time. Although she only became involved in the artist's story after his death, the film portrays her as an integral part of it. It interweaves their correspondence and finds in the dead artist's views inspiration for its own philanthropy and thinking about the world. In doing so, however, the film merely introduces a quest to know van Gogh's fragile soul, which takes shape at the sites of his life and work. It follows the artist, who was able to imprint the depth of his emotions into his brushstrokes, from a familiar church in Auvers to an exhibition in Italy.
