About

Krakatite is the name given to an explosive with unimaginably destructive effects. Its inventor, the engineer Prokop, is himself terrified of it, but for many others it represents a desired instrument of absolute power. In Karel Čapek's novel of the same name, published in 1924, Prokop's experiments and their consequences were purely the author's vision. In contrast, the film adaptation, which was made not long after the Second World War and the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, clearly reflects in part the actual events. Beyond its urgent moral appeal, it still captivates today with its delirious atmosphere and visual ingenuity in real exteriors and fantastical sets.
