About

In 1951, František Vláčil moved from Brno to Prague, where he worked for the Czechoslovak Army Film until 1958. In total, he made around thirty instructional and documentary films for the Czechoslovak Army. Flying Blind Using System OSP introduces a system for guiding aircraft. The opening black-and-white sequence, staging the landing of an aircraft complicated by bad weather and poor visibility, was shot by cameraman Josef Illík. After the dramatic introduction, which, like many sequences in Vláčil's later films, is told only in images, follows a colour section in the form of a lecture for pilots. The audience is presented with the OSP navigation system used in aviation in poor lighting conditions.
