Erik and Phillip long to become successful writers. The publishers reject Erik as untalented, whereas Phillip’s manuscript is accepted, and almost overnight the young man becomes one of the representatives of the Norwegian cultural scene. Six months later, Erik and some friends arrive at a psychiatric institute to take Phillip home after a long convalescence. Phillip has no intention of further pursuing the craft. But Erik continues taking stabs at writing and he tries to convince his friend to do the same. Trier’s debut can be understood as a delicately handled meditation on youth as a time full of promise, plans, and hope – one that gradually and sadly dwindles away under the strain of life’s trials.
