About

Oscar-winning actor Toni Servillo (The Great Beauty) guides a fascinating journey between five contemporary exhibitions of great and Nazi-forbidden artists in New York, Paris, the Netherlands and Germany. Filled with unique archival footage and moving testimonies, the film weaves a story of systematic destruction and looting – from the fate of the Bernheimer family of gallerists who ended up in a concentration camp to the incredible case of Cornelius Gurlitt, the son of a Nazi collaborator and art collector. Some 1,500 works, including previously unknown paintings by Picasso and Monet, were only discovered in 2010 and their value was estimated at more than a million euros. Works of ‚degenerate art‘ that should never have seen the light of day are finally returning to the galleries.
