The Grand Prix of this year's Cannes Film Festival was awarded by the jury to the adaptation of the famous book of the same name by Martin Amis, who was sent to the other world by an incorruptible fate on the day of the film's world premiere. For many, the absolute cinematic highlight of the year, which is undoubtedly in line for at least one Oscar nomination, is a brilliant insight into the life of the family headed by Rudolf Höss, the commander-in-chief of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Together with his wife Hedwig, he and his wife build a comfortable and orderly life in their luxurious villa and in the vast and meticulously landscaped garden surrounded by a high wall. Beyond it, inside the infamous compound, we don't get a single look with Jonathan Glazer, yet his disturbing and highly original drama is one of the most intense cinematic experiences on the subject of the Holocaust and the banality of evil.
