Colonel Ludlow left the United States Army because he disapproved of the genocide of the Indian tribes and settled on a farm in Montana with his three sons, Alfred, Samuel and Tristan. When Samuel brought his beautiful fiancée, Susannah, to the homestead in 1913, no one knew how significantly she would impact the family's life. Meanwhile, war has broken out in Europe and all the brothers volunteer for the army against their father's wishes. The bloody carnage of war soon takes a cruel toll – Alfred is severely wounded and Samuel dies. Tristan avenges his brother's death and goes to sea when the war is over. When he returns to Montana some time later, he has no idea that he is about to embark on a passionate love affair with the lonely Susannah, that his brother Alfred will become a congressman, and that he himself will have to smuggle liquor and fight ruthless, vicious competition to save the family farm…
