Věra Chytilová

Original, Bold, and Tireless – The Legendary Věra Chytilová.

Věra Chytilová is undeniably one of the most prominent and influential figures in Czechoslovak and Czech cinema. Throughout her career, she continually pushed thematic and formal boundaries, embracing new challenges. Her films captivated audiences around the world, and her innovative storytelling, bold visual aesthetics, and uncompromising critique of societal norms continue to serve as a model and inspiration for young filmmakers.

As a leading figure of the Czechoslovak New Wave, she made a striking impression with her early works, such as A Bag of Fleas (1962) and her contribution to Pearls of the Deep (1965), where she demonstrated a unique ability to combine realism with sharp satire.

Chytilová’s signature work, Daisies (1966), a vibrant and anarchistic critique of conformity, became one of the most significant films not only of her career but also of Czechoslovak cinema. In films such as Calamity (1981) and Faun´s Very Late Afternoon (1983), she explored themes of generational conflict and aging, with subtle humor and a chilling sensitivity to absurdity. Love and human relationships in all their complexity were examined in another iconic film, The Apple Game (1976).

In her later works, such as The Inheritance or Fuck off, Boys, Guten Tag (1992) and Traps (1998), she continued to break barriers, boldly tackling taboo subjects with her characteristic wit and provocativeness.
