Pedro Almodóvar lived in Madrid from the age of seventeen, where he became a leading figure in the underground „movida madrileña“ movement. As a self-taught filmmaker, he began making films in 1974. During the 1980s he gained a reputation as a cult filmmaker. The central themes of almost all his films are the problems of interpersonal relationships in a world of mediated communication, human loneliness, love and passion.
