Film Tips from Stanislav Majer
Stanislav Majer, actor and winner of the Czech Lion for his performance in the supporting role in the film The Waves, recommends three films that our viewers should not miss.
Intimate
Lighting – Ivan Passer's masterpiece. I will always love and admire
him. For his humour and perfect ability to capture the ordinariness of weekend
days in the countryside. For its tenderness and fragility. For the funeral
scene, during which he shows us all the beauty of late summer with a single,
simple shot of a waving crop. For the open car window shot of the old
women's faces, which contain all the wisdom and pain of the world. For its
music. Who doesn't cry is not Czech!
Hidden – Michael
Haneke's disturbing film that is even more relevant to me personally than when
it was released in 2005. As usual, Haneke asks very uncomfortable questions but
doesn't give direct answers. It's a film about not letting your conscience be
satisfied by sleeping pills. Nor do you draw the blackout curtains in front of
it. Your conscience will come for you even in the dark.
The Zone of
Interest – Jonathan Glazer. I'll probably never forget his film Under the
Skin. And it will be no different with The Zone of Interest. A completely
unique film that made me feel that a new chapter of cinema was being written.
The way he works with image, colour, light and sound is something incredible
and, I feel, groundbreaking. The last shot, and the whole film in general, gave
me an anxiety I had never felt in a cinema before. Not that I seek out and
recommend such experiences, but it's fascinating what power the film has.
