The question in the title is a desperate response to the state of society, and yet the film remains Almodóvar's most brilliant vision of the state of pop culture, while being surprisingly inspired by neorealism and Dadaism.

Gloria (Carmen Maura) is the central character of the story, a woman who commits a crime but is forgiven because her family and married life was too unbearable. Neorealism is the springboard here for the portrayal of a model of a „typical“ family. The father (Ángel de Andrés López) is an immigrant and a crazy dreamer, the mother may work herself to death to support them all, one of the sons is a drug addict and skip school, and the other is experiencing somewhat premature homosexuality. And last but not least, a slightly deranged grandmother (Chus Lampreave) symbolizes the clash between rural and urban and a return to her roots…
