About

The Cannes jury conferred Best Screenplay (ex aequo with Jafar Panahi’s 3 Faces) on the third picture from the Italian director, who also turned heads on the French Riviera in previous years with Corpo Celeste and The Wonders. Addressing the question whether or not friendship can travel through time, Alice Rohrwacher responds with a dreamlike story of kindhearted Lazzaro, who embarks upon various adventures armed with an unshakable faith in human beings. “I wanted to use the adventures of Lazzaro to tell, as gently as possible, and with love and humour, of the tragedy that has devastated my country. The end of rural civilisation, the migration to city boundaries of thousands of people who knew nothing of modernity, and their giving up of little to have even less,” states the director.
