About

Based on true events, the director filmed the story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountaineer who became the teacher and confidant of the young Dalai Lama for seven long years. His journey began in 1939, when he went to the Himalayas to climb the eight-thousand-foot Nanga Parbat. After the outbreak of World War II, however, he found himself in a British prison camp, from where he escaped and, after inhuman suffering, finally made it to Tibet. He was the first „Westerner“ to enter the forbidden city of Lhasa, becoming a sensation – and a friend of the 11-year-old Dalai Lama. When Communist China begins to threaten Tibet, Harrer joins the political and military resistance of a mysterious and proud nation for its freedom.
