In a family house in the suburbs of Copenhagen live a group of intellectuals who share a special pastime – playing at being idiots and deliberately provoking their surroundings. On a walk, in a restaurant, in a swimming pool, on a factory excursion… This film, with tagline „An Idiot Film about Idiots and for Idiots“, has been dividing audiences since the day it premiered in competition at Cannes, teasing them with its explicitness and its depiction of people with disabilities. The second film in the „Golden Heart Trilogy“, Trier's first film shot entirely on digital camera. Here, the director puts into practice the influential 1995 manifesto he wrote with colleague Thomas Vinterberg, calling for a „purification“ of the film from production editing, a return to simplicity and a focus on story and characters.
